Star review : 3 out of 5
I preordered Expiation with excitement for an excellent ending… but I was a little more upset about it than anything. It felt more like fan fiction, it wasn’t true to the “true love” theme of the series.
It did end with a happy ending. But I was still disappointed with the content.
The book opens with Evan. Who is constantly trying to have sex with Gemma. I think just about every chapter in the first half of the book had sex or something sexual going on. Then we have Gemma, who for starters, and to my disappointment, doesn’t seem to care for her baby. She had to be constantly reminded and I got the feeling that she believed it was an inconvenience. Her and Evan both.
Not much happened with the baby, Liam.
Throughout the book Evan believes that Gemma will overcome evil and return to him after her transformation as a witch. Gemma believes she will loose every memory of Evan. Gemma therefore ends up dying, becomes a witch and doesn’t remember Evan at all. It takes Simon to force her to remember. Which doesn’t go with the whole true love theme. Then after she becomes a witch, Evan kind of forgets he has a newborn son and is obsessed with Gemma. He doesn’t seem to remember till after his son dies. Which is kind of messed up to me, in all honesty. After Gemma starts to remember, there is no other memory or mention of Liam. Evan doesn’t even try to tell her that he’s dead.
The twist that I kinda saw coming was that Peter becoming a Subterranean. Not all surprised there.
Evan then RETURNS to hell to win Gemma’s love, again. Wins her love. Think about it for a second. We were told that they prepare for a bloody battle to defend their love. But it’s one sided. Evan doesn’t even defend his love for Gemma, he is trying to win it, because she doesn’t bloody remember him. She doesn’t remember him at all until he’s about to die by Sophìa’s hand. But in the end… does she live to fight for Evan and her love? Nope. Instead she dies. Yup, again.
So we have a dead baby and a dead witch. Check and check. We now have a mindless Evan, check.
Evan then received access to heaven to be with Gemma, Liam and his mother. Okay great, because Gemma died for him to actually be in heaven with her. Which took him centuries to get that point. So we are reunited in heaven, Liam is growing….. which is odd in itself. So we got the happy ending, but no true love. Liam seemed to not even be of any importance at all. And everyone seems to have died.
If there was less sex. More action and more true love, mommy/daddy moments with Liam, I would have LOVED the book. I am glad we got the happy ending. But I am not happy with everything else. Especially the lack of love towards Liam.
